If you can log in to MetaTrader 4 (MT4) or MetaTrader 5 (MT5) but cannot open a trading position, the most common causes are logging in with an Investor Password, selecting the wrong trading server, insufficient free margin, a disconnected platform, or attempting to trade an instrument that is not currently available for trading.
Common Reasons and How to Fix Them
You Are Using an Investor Password
Investor Passwords provide read-only access and allow you to view account activity and market prices, but they cannot be used to open, modify, or close trades.
What to do:
- Log out of MT4 or MT5.
- Log back in using your trading account password (Master Password).
- Check whether the New Order button becomes available.
You Are Logged In to the Wrong Trading Account or Server
Using the wrong trading account number or selecting the wrong trading server may prevent trading functionality from being enabled.
What to do:
- Confirm that you are using the correct trading account number.
- Confirm that you are connected to the correct trading server.
- If you are unsure, log out and log back in using the trading account credentials assigned to your account.
Your Platform Is Disconnected from the Trading Server
Trading functionality may be unavailable when the platform is disconnected from the trading server.
What to do:
- Verify that the platform is connected to the trading server.
- Check the connection indicator in the bottom-right corner of MT4 or MT5.
- If the platform shows No Connection, log in again and confirm that the correct server is selected.
The Instrument Is Not Currently Tradable
An instrument may not be available for trading because the market is closed, trading has been suspended, or the instrument is not currently supported on your account type or platform.
What to do:
- Open the Market Watch window.
- Locate the instrument you wish to trade.
- Confirm that the instrument is available for trading.
- Review the instrument's trading hours and any relevant announcements.
In some MT4/MT5 environments, instruments displayed in grey are for reference only and cannot be traded.
You Do Not Have Sufficient Available Margin
Your account may not have enough available free margin to satisfy the margin requirement for a new position.
What to do:
- Check your account balance and free margin.
- Review the margin requirement for the selected instrument.
- Ensure sufficient free margin is available before submitting the order.
Restart the Platform
If the issue persists after completing the checks above:
- Close MT4 or MT5 completely.
- Reopen the platform.
Log in again and check whether you can open a new position.
