A dividend is a payment made by a company to its shareholders, usually from profits. In CFD trading, when you hold a share CFD over the ex-dividend date, your account may be credited or debited to reflect the dividend payment:
- Long positions (buy CFDs): You may receive a credit equal to the dividend amount.
- Short positions (sell CFDs): You may incur a debit equal to the dividend amount.
This adjustment ensures that your CFD position reflects the economic effect of dividends, even though you don’t own the underlying shares directly. Dividend adjustments appear in your account statement as a balance adjustment.
